Every Knitting Retreat Worth Booking in 2027

If you have gone looking for a knitting retreat in the last few months, you have probably noticed that most of the lists you find are still full of 2026 dates, and that half of those trips sold out a year ago. This one is for 2027. We went through every retreat we could find with published dates and checked each one on the organizer’s own booking page, so what you get below is the real price, the teacher’s name, the size of the group and whether there is still a place. Our own two retreats are in there with everyone else’s, which felt like the only honest way to do it.

Why book a knitting retreat this far ahead

It helps to see how fast the good ones go. Knitting Tours has two 2027 departures for its Best of Shetland week, one in May and one in September, and both were gone before the end of 2026. Their Copenhagen week was down to a single seat across three dates, and Trips For Knitters had one place left on Orkney in late May.

None of these trips were advertised hard. They simply filled, mostly from people who had been on the previous year’s trip and from the waiting list behind them, which is what happens when a retreat only takes seven or eight people. If something on this list matters to you, the decision you need to make is the deposit, not the balance.

Flights are the other reason. New York to Lisbon averaged around USD 800 round trip over the past year. In January it dipped near USD 500. Book the retreat first and the flight in a cheap month.

Every 2027 knitting retreat we could verify

Before you scan it, a couple of things are worth knowing. Prices are per person, and where we say “shared” we mean a twin or double room with another guest in it; when an organizer publishes only a single-room rate, that is the number you will see. Trips without published 2027 dates were left out entirely, and everything that made it in came off the organizer’s own booking page rather than an aggregator, which is why a few well-known names are missing and a few obscure ones are not.

A few trips have 2027 dates and no published price yet. Knitting Tours’ Wild Atlantic Way (8 May and 2 October). South of Ireland with the Aran Islands (2 September, one place). Knit and Nature Ireland (13 October). Craft Cruises‘ Antarctica, Japan, Mediterranean and Baltic sailings.

The Textile Retreat Company has Cocoknits in France penciled for early May 2027, with a register-your-interest form and nothing else. Shetland Wool Adventures shows no tours planned. Squam has not published spring 2027. Knit Stars lists no in-person retreat.

What is a knitting retreat actually like

The word covers three kinds of trip. The table mixes them on purpose.

A residential retreat is one house and one teacher, with a group that stays together for the week. Mornings at the needles. Afternoons outside. Our Algarve and Bergen weeks work this way, and so do the Trips For Knitters weeks in Fanø and Åndalsnes.

A touring trip moves you. Coach, several hotels, a guide, workshops slotted between mills, museums and ferries. Knitting Tours runs most of its Shetland and Ireland trips like that.

Then there is the ship. Arne and Carlos sail a Hurtigruten vessel with 30 guests. Craft Cruises books onto a Holland America liner, where the knitting classes are one strand of a much larger cruise.

None of these is better. They suit different people. Want to finish a garment and go home with a technique you did not have before? Take a residential week with a small group. The tour makes more sense if you would rather see five wool destinations in nine days. If your partner does not knit but wants to come, look at the ship. A Knitting Tours trip works too. They openly welcome non-knitting partners.

How to judge a retreat before you pay

Teacher access

Count the hours. A retreat that names a famous designer may hand you two ninety-minute classes across a whole week. A less famous teacher with seven guests is there every morning for six days. Our Algarve week runs three to four hours of stranded colorwork with Maaike, every morning. TKGA‘s retreat in New Hampshire publishes twelve class hours over three days. Most organizers publish nothing at all. Ask.

Group size

Seven people at one table is not the same week as thirty people on a ship. A teacher watching seven pairs of hands catches the dropped float before it becomes a pucker. Past about twelve, teaching turns into lecturing and help arrives on rotation. Bigger groups are not wrong. They cost less per head. A solo traveler can disappear into one. Just know which you are buying.

What “all inclusive” covers

Read the inclusions line by line. The usual gaps: lunches, drinks, the transfer from the airport, the yarn. Knitting Tours’ Shetland trips cover six of nine dinners and four lunches. Trips For Knitters covers all meals in Norway but not in Ireland. Icelandic Knitter puts you in a Reykjavík hotel for two nights. Then a country guesthouse with shared bathrooms for four.

Our weeks include every meal and the yarn. The Algarve week includes the group transfer from Lisbon, and we say so on the page. Whatever the trip, add flights and insurance on top. Nobody includes those.

The room question

Solo travelers pay the most attention here, and they are right to. Some organizers price everything as single rooms. Trips For Knitters does that on most of its trips. Some charge a single supplement, GBP 999 to EUR 1,239 at Knitting Tours. And some will not pair you with a stranger at all. Trips For Knitters says plainly that you must bring your own roommate to share.

We offer shared rooms only to friends booking together. A solo guest gets a private room and pays for one. One competitor’s best-ranking page on Google is a piece about sharing a room with a stranger. That is how much this worries people.

What to ask before you pay a deposit

• How many hours of teaching are there, and how many guests share the teacher?
• What skill level is the teaching pitched at, in plain words? “All levels” often means beginners will be fine and advanced knitters will be bored.
• Which meals are included, and which nights are you on your own?
• Is the yarn included, and what is it? A kit of the teacher’s chosen wool is part of what you are paying for.
• How much walking or standing does the week involve? Icelandic Knitter says two to four hours a day. Christel Seyfarth’s Fanø week recommends two miles a day.
• What is the deposit? When is the balance due, and what happens to both if you cancel? Most deposits are non-refundable. Balances typically fall due 90 days out.
• Does the trip run if it is undersold, and at what number?
• If you are traveling alone: will they pair you with a stranger? Charge a supplement? Neither?

Our two knitting retreats in 2027

The Colorwork Knitting Retreat in the Algarve runs twice, 23 to 29 May and 30 May to 5 June. The house is Hortas do Rio. Seven rooms in a farmhouse above the dunes at Carrapateira, on Portugal’s west coast. Seven knitters a week. Mornings go to stranded colorwork in Portuguese-spun Mondim yarn. Afternoons go to the beach below the house, or the cliff path. It asks for intermediate to advanced knitting, with some colorwork and knitting in the round behind you.

Knit the Landscape runs 19 to 25 September near Bergen, an old painters’ colony in the dunes of North Holland. Seven to ten knitters. Six half-day workshops, a yarn kit and a pattern designed for the retreat. This one wants advanced knitters who are comfortable with charts. You walk the dunes first, and the knitting follows what you saw.
